A project, a question, looking for something?
We’ll be very happy to help you!
For over 40 years, Maison La Dorade has been constantly innovating to offer high quality baking products at a competitive price. While the company has evolved tremendously over time, the soul of La Maison has not changed since its very first day: human, authentic and daring.Â
Maison La Dorade is first and foremost a family entrepreneurial adventure.
Founded in 1983 by Joseph Rae, managed afterwards by his son Anthony, today, it is the brothers Damien and Alexandre who are at the helm of the family business. Having also inherited the family’s passion for food, they carry on with the legacy begun by theirÂ
grandfather over 40 years ago.
An entrepreneur at heart, Joseph Rae realised, after talking to numerous Mauritian bakers that good quality yeast was scarce to make their bread rise properly… It was during a casual conversation that an idea struck him!   Â
After searching far and wide to find a unique and high-performance product, the obvious choice was Mauripan, the Australian yeast, with its shelf-stability, multi-purpose use and high reliability… in other words, the perfect starting product !  Â
Joseph converted his guest room into an office and officially launched J Rae & Cie (La doRAdE). Contrary to popular belief, Joseph did not draw inspiration from the depths of the oceans for the name but from his very own family: DO for his eldest daughter Doreen, A for Anthony, the youngest of the family and DE for Dennis, the middle son. And RAE to bring them all together!
Often while going around meeting his clients, Joseph noticed that his product greatly facilitated the lives of bakers and pastry chefs. As Mauripan boxes gradually took over his office, he started wondering how he could develop further and what would be the product that would make bread even better. A new idea was born: importing improvers ! Â Â Â
Orders were multiplied and the family business took over more and more space in the house in Curepipe where it was set up. Indeed, in order to stock all the supplies, Joseph converted the garage into a store…Â
Gradually, many other ingredients were added to the list, all with the same objective: to make life easier for bakers!Â
After developing the range of ingredients, the father/son duo continue to grow the family After the range of ingredients, the father/son duo went on to expand the family business by importing equipments ! Their very first import was the Bongard bread oven. The first of so many more to come…Â
On their trip to the IBA Munich trade fair, Anthony and his brother Dennis discovered the BAKELS brand and it proved to be a turning point. After testing various brands, Bakels proved to be perfectly adapted to their customers’ needs. It was then added to the La Dorade portfolio and transformed the business into an essential partner of bakers and pastry chefs in Mauritius.
Both family home and office of the company, the house in the centre of Curepipe was the setting for the development of J Rae & Cie (La Dorade). In 2009, the family left the house for good to convert it entirely into the J Rae & Cie (La Dorade) office.
Following their studies, Damien and Alexandre, Anthony’s sons, returned to Mauritius and joined the family business: Damien, the eldest son, as future manager, and Alexandre,  the younger one, in charge of all the equipment side. The two brothers, respectful and complementary, took over the business on their father’s passing away in 2013. Highly respected by his peers, Anthony will remain an icon to the company’s collaborators but also to the customers he served with kindness, respect and graciousness.   Â
Inspired every day by the talent of their grandfather and their father, the ambition of Damien and Alexandre is to carry on the family legacy by continuing the story begun by their grandfather while adhering to the fundamental values established in 1983…  Â
This inexhaustible source of energy propels them to try new things, innovate and reinvent themselves every day to serve the dough artisans!
In 2015, La Dorade decided to dedicate a specific area to customers who wished to come try the quality of La Dorade’s ingredients, ovens and other equipment. In this space, all sorts of treats were produced. In just a few weeks, the Dough Rae Me brand was born and brought a breath of  fresh-out-of-the-oven products to the house. Frozen pies with Mauritian flavors, petit fours and many other delicacies come out every day from the artisanal kitchen of La Dorade.Â
We love bread so much that we celebrate it regularly!Â
In May 2018, we also took at the opportunity of the bread festival to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the company.  On the menu: making all types of bread, previewing the latest flavors of our pies, baking professionals meeting up and sharing their concerns… And for the occasion, two of our international suppliers came over to attend the event and meet our customers.  It was a landmark moment for La Dorade and we were delighted to be able to share it with our customers and suppliers.
After 37 years in Curepipe, the company relocated to Phoenix in a brand new office.Â
On its 40th anniversary, J Rae & Cie (La Dorade) became Maison La Dorade. A shift to put the company’s DNA at the very heart of its name: family oriented, human and welcoming. La Maison refers as much to the family home in Curepipe, home base of the company, as to the traditional character that it has continued to promote. As for La Dorade, the so distinctive and enigmatic brand has made such a name for itself that it was impossible to do away with it… Â
Quality products depend on quality ingredients. Taste first and foremost! Our selection has made us become the benchmark in baking and pastry making ingredients in Mauritius.Â
Our industrial equipment is a promise of unfailing performance, ease of use and time saving… All that you need to match productivity with delights in the kitchen! Â
